IASIM – the International Association for Spectral Imaging

What does the microstructure layers of coated oil capsules, yield and quality of spring wheat crops, fat penetration in fried foods, moisture migration in baguettes, label-free characterization of karyotypes and blending of pharmaceutical drug formulations have in common? They are all applications of hyperspectral imaging (HSI): ranging in scale from microscopic to remote sensing, FT-IR ATR to VNIR.  They were also some of the topics discussed at the recent EASIM meeting held in Gembloux, Belgium, 3 – 4 March. (55 participants from 14 countries)

Two important developments resulted from the EASIM meeting:

1)      A new association has been created: ‘European’ was expanded to ‘International’, hence EASIM changed to IASIM – the International Association for Spectral Imaging. The goal of this association is to increase the collaboration and open discussion between differing spectral imaging ‘sub-groups’, and to promote the general use of hyperspectral imaging.  We’re brand new… we have a domain name: www.iasim.net  but not a website yet. However we do have a public forum to discuss all aspects of spectral imaging: www.iasim.net/forum. Stop by, register, and add a comment!

2)      A brand new journal has been created:  The Journal of Spectral Imaging (JSI) has been launched by IMPublications (EJMS, JNIR and JNIRnews) www.impublications.com/imaging. This peer-reviewed journal is totally electronic – which is important for the imaging community. High resolution color images are easily supported. It is also intended that authors may make datasets and relevant algorithm code available for download. The journal is now accepting submissions, and will begin with publication of proceedings from the EASIM meeting in Belgium. During 2009, access to papers is free to registered users.
