Hyperspectral imaging is a surface measurement method. Dust or anything masking the surface of samples can disturb the scanning and hinder the measurements.
Dust on a measured object
Clean samples are always better measured, improving their identification. For example, samples must be cleaned before being scanned when measuring drilled cores.
In recycling, dust or packaging labels can hinder the sorting accuracy of the system. If the material to be sorted cannot be cleaned or adequately exposed to the camera, the sorting algorithms need to be adjusted to take this into account.
Dust in the environment
The front optics of the camera can also gather dust. Dust prevents the camera from collecting the light, making it less sensitive or completely blind. Stray light may also increase. In a dusty environment, we recommend cleaning the camera regularly or using a wind curtain or a dedicated casing (see Figure 1.).

Specim FX10 and FX17 cameras are compliant with an IP rating of 52 (IP rating information). However, if in a large quantity or made of very light particles, dust can penetrate the camera and its optical parts. The use of casing can prevent such pollution and provide up to 66 or 67 IP protection. Another advantage of the casing is that the temperature can be stabilized, allowing the operation of the camera in harsh conditions. Other types of casing with a lower IP rating can be used, but those need to be over-pressurized to keep the dust away.
Dust may also gather on the illumination. We recommend cleaning the lights regularly.
You can use Specim cameras also outside. In outdoor use, you should use a UV-resistant casing. A pressure equalization valve and over-pressurized casings are recommended.
